What is HEMA?
HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) is the reconstruction of the lost combat systems of Europe. It is part history, part athleticism, and part martial science.
For centuries, the sword was a primary tool of survival and justice. Masters of defense wrote detailed manuals on how to fight effectively with the Longsword, Rapier, Dagger, and more. As firearms rose to prominence, these arts faded into obscurity. At House of Blades, we are part of a global movement dedicated to bringing these skills back to life, not as roleplay, but as a legitimate martial discipline.
The Sword and the Pen
Our training doesn't come from guesswork; it comes from research. We treat historical fencing manuals dating from the 1300s to the 1800s as our textbooks.
Studying HEMA is often like solving a physical puzzle. We analyze the text and illustrations left behind by the old masters, decode their intent, and then test those theories on the mats. For those who love history, this offers a fascinating intellectual challenge. You aren't just reading about the past; you are physically embodying the movement and mindset of people who lived centuries ago.
Your Pace, Your Journey
While the source material is old, the workout is very real. HEMA is a full-body discipline that improves coordination, reflexes, and cardio. However, how you approach it is up to you.
The Martial Artist: For those seeking intensity, HEMA is a fast-paced, competitive sport. We spar with steel to test our reflexes and pressure-test our technique.
The Technician: For those focused on mechanics, HEMA is a study of structure and geometry. You can spend years perfecting the flow of a single play without ever needing to enter a high-intensity tournament.
Whether you want to push your physical limits or simply enjoy the art of movement, there is a place for you on the floor.
Modern Steel, Modern Trust
We practice these historical arts with modern safety standards. We use blunt, flexible steel blades designed for training, along with high-impact fencing masks and protective gear.
This equipment allows us to practice dangerous techniques safely, but gear is only half the equation. At House of Blades, we believe that trust is the most important safety feature. We foster an environment where training partners look out for one another, allowing us to push our skills without fear of injury.
Who is this for?
Everyone. We see students from all walks of life. We welcome former sport fencers looking for more freedom of movement, gamers and fantasy fans wanting to understand the reality behind the stories, and complete beginners looking for a fun way to stay active.
You do not need to be a historian or an athlete to start. You just need an open mind and a willingness to learn.
